Benicio Del Toro Thinks Jim Carrey And Sean Penn Are Still On Board For 'The Three Stooges'

Rats, spiders, sharks? Bring ‘em on. In the grand scheme of things, I don’t possess a lot of fears, phobias or terrors. But there is one thing I am deathly afraid of, something that has literally kept me up at night: The new “Three Stooges” movie.

As I’ve written before, I’m a lifelong Stoogemaniac who can’t help but feel that the Farrelly Brothers’ planned reboot is a bad, bad idea. So, when I caught up with Benicio Del Toro over the weekend at the press junket for this week's "The Wolfman," I just had to hear it from his own mouth: They’re seriously going to make this thing?

“Well, we’re not there yet,” explained the “Traffic” Oscar-winner, who is planning to play Moe Howard. “But the idea is still alive.”

“I can’t tell you that we have a date,” he added. “But there is an ideal cast, and we’ll see what happens.”

Full disclosure: I like Del Toro. He’s a fine actor, I’ve interviewed him numerous times and I had no doubt while speaking with him that he has the best of intentions. Nevertheless, his answer didn’t really satisfy me when I asked the key question that’s been on my mind since the project was announced: Why?

“Why? Why not? You know, I don’t know,” Del Toro said. “Once I get that bowl haircut, maybe I’ll convince you.”

As I was sitting opposite him, I could kinda see a physical resemblance to Howard, leader of the most brilliant team of physical comedians of all time. But Del Toro told me that he’s only definitely on board if the other two proposed superstars play Larry and Curly. As far as he knows, despite rumors to the contrary, they’re still on board for a half-wit’s holiday.

“If that whole group of actors -- the other two actors that they’re talking about -- if they do it, I’m definitely going to be there,” Del Toro promised. “Jim Carrey and Sean Penn. But nothing is for sure; it’s not locked.”

As for Penn -– an old pal of Del Toro’s who starred opposite him in “21 Grams” –- Benicio said the duo have had conversations about how they could translate their acting talents into skillful-but-lowbrow physical comedy on par with the classics. “Yeah, [Penn and I] have talked, but I haven’t talked to him in a while,” Del Toro said. “He’s interested; it’s just about schedule.”

At the end of the interview, Del Toro gave me a quick Curly-inspired hand wiggle in mid air. As a movie buff, there’s no other project that currently fascinates me as much. As a Stooges fan, all I can do is promise to keep an open mind – and hope Howard, Fine and Howard are sleeping soundly in their graves.

What do you think? Can you see Moe in Benicio Del Toro? Can the names attached make a new “Three Stooges” work?
